Get iPad data 33 times cheaper

3G or not 3G - that is the question iPad owners are asking themselves - and they could save themselves a small fortune by getting it right.

Thousands queued outside Apple's UK stores on Friday to get this year's must- have gadget but many are puzzled about which 3G web connection to go with.

Prices vary hugely across networks with some costing 33 TIMES as much as others.

But our handy guide, right, will help find the best deal.

The iPad comes in six versions depending on memory size and connectivity. The cheapest, 16GB, costing £429, connects to the internet using Wi-Fi - either at home, the office or hotspots. For around £100 more you'll get one that also connects to 3G networks like a mobile phone. To use that you will also need a sim card and data package from O2, Orange, Vodafone or 3.

The News of the World found the £10-per-month packages from O2 and Vodafone allow users just 1GB of data transfer - equivalent to just ten hours browsing or five four-minute video clips.

But choose rival 3 and you get 10GB - ten times as much - for £15 a month, just £5 more. Vodafone and Orange do have other packages you can consider. Going over the limits typically costs 10p per MB, or just over half a minute of browsing. Pay-as-you-go deals and daily access packages can cost even more.
Orange's 5p per MB deal could soon see costs racking up. For £1.50, users would get just 30MB, or 33 times less than from network 3.

Technology expert Jim Clark, from retail analysts Mintel, said: "The iPad is designed for browsing videos, music and books - and that sucks up data quickly. If you get the wrong plan and go over your allowance, it can cost an arm and a leg."

Mike Wilson of moneysupermarket.com said: "Research and shop around, especially heavy users."

Appy days

APPLE'S new iPad will change the way we read newspapers, books and magazines - FOREVER.

And the sharpest minds in cyberspace agree that if it's worth reading, it's worth money.

Stephen Fry - so clever that he answers all his own questions on BBC's QI show - reckons people will flock to the iPad to buy their daily fix of news, gossip and sport.

"It's inevitable," he told GadgiTs at the launch. "A lot of people out there say everything has to be free.

"But if you want to read anything that's better than the average Citizen Blogger, you'll have to pay for it. It's only right."

Showing off his own App called Fry Paper, like a kid with a new toy, he slid his fingers across the screen, zooming in on one of his articles.

"Just look at that, it's so good," he said.

As hundreds of Apple staff welcomed the first customers at 8am on Friday with wild cheers, Fry looked around in disbelief: "This is more like a Lady Gaga gig," he said. But the star, with 1.5 million Twitter followers, is convinced the hyped up celebrations are justified because of the the possibilities offered by the iPad.

"Do you know, they are even researching ways of helping autistic kids with these," he said.

The almost A4-sized iPad is just like a large iPod touch that can serve up any type of digital entertainment you can think of.

And bigger is better for most functions, especially video and game play.

And because of the almost full-sized virtual keyboard, it's far less fiddly to type an email and browse the web than on an iPhone.

This tablet computer is all about relaxing and leisure time, especially as it doesn't have a phone. But the best thing about the iPad is the way it brings the printed word to life.

Stuck on a meaning? Just put your finger on the word and up pops a dictionary definition.

Authors can now animate books, rather than illustrate. If you have difficulty reading, the iPad will read it to you. Fry gave Gadgits a quick demo of the mind-blowing educational App called Elements.

It's like a glossy coffee table book on steroids, with pics, video, animations and text describing everything from Mercury to Gold. Which sums up the iPad.

iPad makes worldwide debut

Gadget lovers from London to Tokyo lined up to be among the first to purchase Apple's new iPad outside the United States.

Technophiles mobbed Apple Stores in Europe and Asia on Friday in a quest to snatch up the hottest gadget of the moment -- the iPad.

Long lines snaked down streets in London, Paris, Frankfurt and Tokyo as eager buyers vied to wield their credit cards. Screams and cheers rose from the crowd in central London as students, professionals and self-proclaimed computer geeks clutched boxes containing the slim black device.

``If I was a music fan, it would be like the launch of a Lady GaGa album in the U.S.,'' said comedian Stephen Fry, known in Britain as a champion Tweeter.

Apple Inc., based in Cupertino, Calif., said earlier this month that it had sold 1 million of the devices in the United States in just 28 days. Apple started taking orders for the iPad abroad on May 10 after pushing back its international delivery target amid extreme demand at home.

In hopes of better times, Britain's Financial Times newspaper launched its iPad version at a swank press event at a hotel overlooking Lake Geneva in Switzerland, claiming the app has already been downloaded more than 100,000 times in the United States.

Rob Grimshaw, managing director of FT.com. said 20 percent of new digital subscriptions to the paper came from iPad users last week.

``I think it's going to be an extremely lucrative device for us,'' he said.

In Britain, prices for versions of the iPad range from 429 pounds to 699 pounds ($624 to $1,017).

The rollout, however, has not been without its problems. A string of suicides at a Chinese factory that churns out iPads and other high-tech items has raised concerns about conditions for workers who face tremendous time pressures and harsh discipline for mistakes.

In response, Apple issued a statement expressing commitment to ensuring that conditions ``throughout our supply chain are safe and workers are treated with respect and dignity.''

The bad publicity did not hurt launches in Europe and Asia. Besides Britain, the device was being unveiled Friday in Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Spain and Switzerland.

At the Apple Store in Frankfurt, Germany, hundreds lined up -- including a few who arrived as early as 3 a.m. Some said they'd arrived so early not because they wanted to own it first -- but simply to get an iPad at all.

In Tokyo, where the love of gadgetry reigns supreme and consumers have devices more sophisticated than those available in the United States, about 1,200 people lined up in the busy Ginza shopping district. They chanted a countdown ahead of the Apple Store's 8 a.m. opening.

10 dead as Israeli forces storm Gaza aid convoy

(CNN) -- International condemnation poured in Monday after Israeli soldiers stormed a flotilla of ships carrying aid intended for Palestinians in Gaza, leaving at least 10 people dead in the resulting violence.

Israel claimed it was defending itself, with the Israel Defense Forces saying the soldiers' lives were in danger after they were attacked with "severe physical violence, including live fire, weapons, knives and clubs."

IDF spokeswoman Lt. Col. Avital Leibowitz said light weapons and handguns were confiscated. "We basically encountered a lynch," she said. "We had to control this violence."

But other nations condemned the military action and called for an investigation.

The Spanish and French governments called the action "disproportionate." The Italian foreign minister asked the European Union to investigate, and several nations, including Greece and Sweden, were summoning their Israeli ambassadors.

An indignant Turkey recalled its ambassador from Israel, canceled three planned military exercises with the Israeli military and called home its youth national football team, which had two games scheduled in Israel, said Deputy Prime Minister Bulent Arinc.

Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan was in Chile, but will return after meeting with the Chilean president, Arinc said. The chief of the Turkish military was cutting short a trip to Egypt. The Turkish foreign minister, in Venezuela, was calling the United Nations Security Council to an emergency meeting, Arinc said.

"This operation will leave a bloody stain on the history of humanity," Arinc said. A Turkish group, the Humanitarian Relief Foundation or IHH, was one of the organizers of the flotilla, but people from various nations were aboard.

In a statement, Bahrain called it a "barbaric attack" on the part of Israel.

Five Israeli soldiers were wounded, the military said. The ships of the flotilla were being taken to the Israeli port of Ashdod, according to IDF.

"We are shocked by reports of killings and injuries of people on board boats carrying supplies for Gaza, apparently in international waters," said a joint statement from Robert Serry, U.N. special coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process, and Filippo Grandi, commissioner-general of the UN Relief and Works Agency.

"We condemn the violence and call for it to stop."

The Free Gaza Movement, one of the groups sponsoring the flotilla, disputed Israel's claim of violence by people aboard the ships.

"At about 4:30 am, Israeli commandos dropped from a helicopter onto deck of Turkish ship, immediately opened fire on unarmed civilians," said a post on the group's Twitter page.

Video aired on CNN sister network CNN Turk showed soldiers abseiling onto the deck of a ship from a helicopter above.

The boarding of the ships took place more than 70 nautical miles outside Israeli territorial waters, according to IHH.

The Turkish foreign ministry said the incident "might cause irreversible consequences" in the nation's relationship with Israel.

"Israel has once again clearly demonstrated that it does not value human lives and peaceful initiatives through targeting innocent civilians," the statement said. "We strongly condemn these inhuman acts of Israel."

Meanwhile, a protest that began outside the Israeli embassy in Istanbul on Sunday continued into Monday. Although largely peaceful, police did use water cannons at one point to keep demonstrators at bay. Israel issued a "serious travel warning" for Israelis visiting Turkey. Those planning to travel to Turkey were asked to postpone their trip, while those in Turkey were advised to stay indoors.

The Israeli PM office has issues a serious travel warning for Israeli travelers visiting Turkey. The warning calls Israelis who are about to travel into Turkey to postpone their trip and for Israelis in Turkey to remain indoors and avoid presence in the city centers.

In Gaza, where the flotilla was headed, Hamas spokesman Sami Abu Zuhri called for global support of the Palestinian cause.

"The Israeli attack on the Freedom Flotilla is an ugly crime and against international law and this reflects the nature of the criminal Israeli occupation," Zuhri said. "We call upon the free world Arab and Muslim world to stand in support and help and support the international activists who have been subjected to killing in the middle of the sea."

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas called for three days of mourning in the Palestinian territories to honor the lives lost.

Israeli government spokesman Mark Regev accused the leaders of the flotilla of looking for a fight.

"They wanted to make a political statement. They wanted violence," according to Regev, who said Israel wanted a peaceful interception of the ships trying to break Israel's blockade of Gaza. "They are directly responsible for the violence and the deaths that occurred."

The convoy of boats approached Gaza in defiance of an Israeli blockade and had been shadowed by three Israeli warships. Free Gaza had reported Sunday that they had been contacted by the Israeli navy.

The boats left European ports in a consolidated protest organized by two pro-Palestinian groups to deliver tons of food and other aid to Gaza to break a blockade imposed by Israel in 2007.

The maritime convoys were organized by both the Free Gaza Movement and the IHH, a humanitarian relief foundation affiliated with the Muslim Brotherhood religious group.

Israel said Sunday that Western and Turkish authorities have accused IHH of having "working relations" with different terrorist organizations.

The IDF said the Gaza shoreline is not specifically deemed a "closed military area," but it is closed to maritime traffic. The Israeli government has decided to prevent all ships from reaching the Gaza shore to prevent any attempts to bring in ammunition or missiles that could potentially harm Israeli citizens, the IDF said.

* 鼻血情況持續,並超過20分鐘;

* 鼻子遭撞擊受傷,出現移位、腫脹或變色。

1)用乾淨的清水輕輕清洗傷口,並用乾淨的布或紙抹乾;

2)用清潔的鉗子清除任何在傷口內的異物;

3)用清潔的棉墊按傷口數分鐘去止血,亦可以用清潔的紗布、手帕或毛巾去止血;

4)塗上抗感染的藥膏;

1)傷口噴出大量血液;

2)流血持續超過五分鐘,或者多次按住傷口五分鐘後都未能止血;

《Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time》改編人氣遊戲

導演:Mike Newell
演員:Jake Gyllenhaal、Gemma Arterton、Ben Kingsley、Alfred Molina、Toby Kebbell
Walt Disney Pictures.

萬衆期待已久的一部大製作電影——《Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time》,終于快上映了!

The 10 Best Video Game Consoles of All Time

Video game consoles have come a long way in the three decades since they first appeared. They began as simple entertainment devices for uber-nerd hobbyists—remember the Atari 2600? Since then, gaming has ballooned into a mainstream, multi-billion dollar industry featuring graphical powerhouses like the Sony PlayStation 3, which can render millions of polygons per second. Systems have come and gone in meanwhile, and I thought it would be worth taking a look back to rank the all-time greatest. Raw power isn't a consideration; if it were, the Nintendo Wii, Microsoft Xbox 360, and PS3 would wipe the floor with the Atari 2600, NES, and other trailblazers. Instead, I've ranked them on their importance and innovation. Some selections are obvious; but I've I considered not only consoles released stateside, but overseas as well, so some might surprise you. I've owned all the consoles mentioned, so this list comes from genuine, hands-on experience. Enjoy the ride as I count down the top 10 video game consoles of all time.

Check out the slideshow below for a countdown to the #1 greatest game console of all time. And, if you disagree with my ratings, feel free to post your own list (and your reasons) in the comments. You'll be wrong, of course, but feel free.

May 31 Is 'Quit Facebook Day'. Are You In?

Let's face it: Facebook hit critical mass and the mainstream a while ago. According to the site itself, there are over 400 million active users, and 50 percent of them visit on any given day. Even my brother-in-law's 91-year-old grandma is on Facebook. Now that's mainstream.

When anything grows that large, that quickly, backlash is all but inevitable. But "backlash" seems like a mild term to apply to the very vocal and growing complaints that Facebook plays fast and loose with its members' privacy.

In his column titled "Facebook: Privacy Enemy Number One?" PCMag's reviews editor Dan Costa noted in April that "the simple fact that gets lost in the rush towards ubiquitous social connectivity is that Facebook users still don't know what they are sharing, with whom, or why it matters. In short: Facebook remains a privacy minefield.

And just yesterday, lead software and Web services analyst Michael Muchmore reported in his story, "Grading Facebook's Privacy Changes": "In the wake of members of Congress and consumer watchdog groups' calling for changes to Facebook's privacy policy, chief executive Mark Zuckerberg admitted that the company "missed the mark," and made changes to Facebook's privacy policy that were announced at a press event on Wednesday."

Changes that will be rolling out include a one-click privacy-setting button; less information in public profiles; and more control over the access Web services and apps have to your information.

Are these enough for you, though? Or will you be joining the Facebookers who have vowed to quit the service on what they've dubbed Quit Facebook Day, this coming May 31? Vote in our poll and check the results.

– Agensi

Contrite Facebook CEO promises new privacy controls

Buffeted by privacy snafus and the lingering fallout from a damning, years-old instant messaging thread, Facebook chief exec Mark Zuckerberg switched into full-on damage control Monday, confessing that the sprawling social network had "missed the mark" when it comes to its complex privacy controls — and pledging to do better.

In an open letter published Monday in the Washington Post (whose chairman, Donald E. Graham, just so happens to sit on Facebook's board of directors), Zuckerberg wrote that Facebook has been "growing quickly" and admitted that "sometimes we move too fast."

"Many of you thought our controls were too complex," Zuckerberg's letter reads. "Our intention was to give you lots of granular controls" — uh, you can say that again — "but that may not have been what many of you wanted. We just missed the mark."

Zuckerberg promised, in "coming weeks," privacy controls that will be "much simpler to use" — including an "easy way to turn off all third-party services" that can access your account.

But Zuckerberg wasn't just announcing new privacy features in Monday's open letter; he was also clearly trying to bridge a growing trust gap between Facebook and its increasingly suspicious users, especially in light of reports last week that Facebook (among other social networks) had been passing along user name and IDs to advertisers (including Google's DoubleClick and Yahoo!'s own Right Media) without users' consent. Those privacy loopholes have since been plugged, say Facebook, MySpace and other social networks.

But Zuckerberg is also being dogged by an embarrassing IM thread from when he was a 19-year-old Harvard student, bragging that he'd gathered personal information from thousands of users for the nascent TheFacebook.com. "People just submitted it," Zuckerberg messaged, "I don't know why. They 'trust me.' Dumb [expletive]." (This comes via Silicon Alley Insider.)

Naturally, the indiscreet IM thread has ignited controversy. Some argue that Zuckerberg shouldn't be held accountable for something he'd written when he was still a teenager (all of six years ago, mind you). Others say the remarks illustrate a cavalier attitude toward user privacy.

The debate seems to have struck a chord with Zuckerberg, who bent over backward in his letter Monday to emphasize Facebook's "core principles," which include seeking to build a "better world" that's "open and connected."

Zuckerberg also revealed a bit more in an e-mail to blogger Robert Scoble, confiding that "we've made a bunch of mistakes" but that he hopes "people understand that our intentions are in the right place."

Well, as I'm sure Zuckerberg understands, people tend to believe actions more than words, and a revamped set of simple, easy-to-use privacy controls — including, say, the option to start from scratch and opt in to sharing options rather than having to opt out — would be a step in the right direction. But rebuilding trust with Facebook's users will be a long, slow process, and the fewer privacy missteps between now and then, the better.

What do you think of Zuckerberg's letter? Does he sound sincere to you? Willing to give Facebook and its upcoming privacy reboot the benefit of the doubt? Or are you ready to jump ship for good?

Mee Tuaran

This is my favourite food.

Mee goreng, or fried noodles is a universal favourite. In Sabah, there is a special kind of mee goreng called mee Tuaran (Tuaran being the name of one of the districts in Sabah). Mee Tuaran noodles are made of batter of egg yolk and flour, which gives the noodle a yummy egg aroma when fried. It is usually cooked with local vegetables, such as the sawi, as well as various meats or seafood, and eggs.

I will take time travel to pekan Tuaran this June holidays. see wat have change with this city.

Miss USA Slips to Conquer

She slipped a bit during her walk in her gown. It wasn't enough to make her fall, but the Donald Trump's producers made sure you saw it again in slo-mo while Joan Rivers carped about it, as if to nudge YouTube into action.

In the end, Miss Michigan Rima Fakih took the crown anyway, after answering a question over whether birth control pills should be covered by health insurance ("Absolutely!").

It's the slips on the runway or controversey in the topical questions that has created whatever little interest there still is in this pageant, so in addition to the heavy wax on the stage of the Planet Hollywood, there were some pretty pointed questions, the first of which from Oscar Nunez of "The Office" was about the new Arizona law about demanding IDs from anybody suspected to be illegal aliens that drew boos even while he was asking it.

It went to the person who became the first runner up, Miss Oklahoma Morgan Woolard, who got cheers when she said, "I'm a huge believer of states's rights. That's what I think is so wonderful about America. So I think it's perfectly fine for Arizona to create that law."

To this she quickly added: "And I'm against illegal immigration but I'm also against racial profiling, so I see both sides in this issue."

Arab-American Crowned Miss USA

AP

A 24-year-old Arab-American from Dearborn, Michigan beat out 50 other women to be crowned 2010 Miss USA.

Rima Fakih, the daughter of Lebanese immigrants, is believed to be the first Muslim and Arab-American to become Miss USA, according to The Detroit Free Press. But pageant officials said historical records were not detailed enough to confirm back to 1952 when the pageant began.

Fakih won the pageant Sunday night after swimsuit, evening gown and interview competitions at the Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino in Las Vegas. She replaces Miss USA 2009 Kristen Dalton and will represent the U.S. in the 2010 Miss Universe pageant.

A year after the pageant's runner-up, Miss California Carrie Prejean, divided judges with her controversial answer against legalizing same-sex marriage, this year's controversy stirred from a racy lingerie promotional photo shoot of the glammed-up contestants. But the ceremony itself was a tame affair.

During the competition, Fakih nearly fell while finishing her walk in a long, strapless white gown because of the length of its train. She recovered without falling, and later said the gown looked like a wedding dress that made her look like a mermaid.

One of their biggest challenges was not to stumble in the interview portion of the pageant.

In the interview, Fakih was asked whether she thought birth control should be paid for by health insurance, and she said she believed it should.

Miss Oklahoma USA Morgan Elizabeth Woolard was first runner-up after handling a question about Arizona's new immigration law. She said she supports it.

A panel of eight judges, including NBA star Carmelo Anthony and Treasure Island casino-hotel owner Phil Ruffin, were judging the girls throughout the night. TODAY's Natalie Morales and celebrity chef Curtis Stone hosted the event.

The public can also buy flowers which will be on sale that day to give their favourite contestants, and the one receiving the most flowers by May 14 will be nominated as 'Miss Popular', he said.

"Registration is still open and will close on April 24," he said, adding, "for this category winners will receive RM4,000, RM3,000 (second place) and RM2,500 (third) respectively."

"Among the kind of food to be contested include Hinava Ikan Tenggiri (pickled fish), Hinava Udang (pickled prawn), Butod, Hinompuka beras (a kind of kuih), Lihing (rice wine) and Montoku," he said.

The Rituals of Tadau Kaamatan ( Harvest Festival )

One of the main and permanent fixture of the annual Sabah Fest is the Tadau Kaamatan or Harvest Festival celebrations at the end of May. The most easily-recognizable features of this celebration is the general merry-making, cultural performances, traditional sports, and of course, the Unduk Ngadau ( Harvest Festival Queen ) pageant.

The Tadau Kaamatan however has its antecedents in religious beliefs and traditional rituals of the indigenous Kadazan-Dusun people which are directly connected to rice planting and harvesting. If one is to delve deeper into the observance of this festival, one must understand the several rituals involved and their significance.

The Kadazan-Dusuns believe that in the days of yore the people suffered a great famine. Their God ( Kinoingan ) took pity upon them, and sacrificed his daughter, Huminodun, by cutting her into small pieces. Her flesh was sown over the land and from these sprang the first rice plants. Thus the Kadazan-Dusun community believes that the transfigured sacrifice of Huminodun is embodied as the spirit of rice known as Bambazon / Bambarayon. The Kaamatan ( Harvest ) Festival is therefore celebrated to fulfill the five major purposes :

  • Home-coming of Bambazon to the Tangkob ( Large rice storage container )

  • To restore Bambazon which was lost during careless harvesting and processing of rice through the Magavau ritual ceremony

  • To feed the Bambazon with special food (rice wine, fermented rice ( tandut ), eggs, salt and feathers of a slaughtered chicken

  • Friendship and merry-making feast.

The festival is observed in 6 rituals stages :

1. The Kumogos Ceremony

Before a harvest begins, a Bobohizan / Bobolian ( ritual specialist ) will select and tie-up 7 stalks of the best rice from a plot of rice field. These stakes of rice will only be harvested after the particular plot of field has been completely harvested. The 7 stalks of rice will then be scattered all over the rice field. This gesture is to inform the other spirits who may be present among the rice field not to make any disturbance when the harvesting work is to commenced and each of them will be given something after the harvest.

2. The Kumotob Ceremony

From the area which has not yet been harvested to the Bobohizan/Bobolian will select 7 stalks of the best rice. The selected stalks are then tied up together and placed in a tadang ( a type of basket for keeping rice ). The rest of the rice in the field are then harvested and the rice are turned into seed for future planting season.

3. The Posisip Ceremony

The Bobohizan/Bobolian goes to a rice hut together with the 7 stalks of rice which is tied up and placed in the tadang. While reciting chants she takes out the bundle of rice stalks and insert them in a bamboo pole kept in the tangkob. The recital of the chants is to call the spirit of the rice to stay in the rice hut until the next planting season, i.e. when the rice spirits are called to the rice field again.

4. The Poiib Ceremony

In the rice hut the Bobohizan / Bobolian carefully pours the rice into the tangkob. This process is repeated for a number of times until all the rice has poured into the tangkob. The Bobohizan/Bobolian then recite chants appealing to the rice spirits to keep watch over the rice stored in the tangkob.

5. The Magavau Ceremony

This is the most important ceremony in the sequence of events of the harvest festival. This focuses in the restoration of Bambazon / Bambarayon as well as offering food to Bambazon / Bambarayon. In the olden days, the Magavau ritual is performed in the padi field on the night of the first full moon after the harvest. Nowadays, this ritual is carried out in the house of the owner of the field.

6. The Humabot Ceremony

This is the final stage of the observation of the harvest festival and is in the form of merry-making and entertainment. This ceremony is now celebrated at village, district and state levels annually ( 30 - 31 May ). A variety of entertainment and activities in the form of dances and traditional sports are held and the climax of the event is the selection of the Unduk Ngadau ( Harvest Festival Queen ). The Unduk Ngadau symbolizes Huminodun, the sacrificed daughter of Kinoingan.

The rituals described above are typical of the Kadazan-Dusun of the Penampang-Papar area. Other dusunic groups, the murutic groups of the interior and the paitanic groups in the east have different rice harvest rituals. For example, the Lotud Dusun have a series of eight ceremonies - Mansalud, Monuras, Tumakau, Matang, Mongoi Rumali, Mogimpuun, Sumondod and Monumbui. The essence of this ceremony however is the same, that is of thanksgiving for a plentiful harvest.

Pesta Kaamatan

Pesta Kaamatan

Most native Sabahans consider rice to be more important than just the main staple food. There is a certain sacredness attached to it, for it is a food given to them by Kinoingan, the Almighty Creator so that his people should never want for food. He sacrificed His only daughter- Huminodun and from her body parts, padi (rice) grew. This was Kinoingan's ultimate act of benevolence and to this day, His people repay the deed by conducting various ceremonies to honour Bambaazon, the spirit of Huminodun as embodied in rice.

The most well-known of these is Pesta Kaamatan or Harvest Festival which begins on the first of May and celebrated throughout Sabah. Of major importance to this thanksgiving ceremony is the Magavau - a ritual to invite Bambaazon to the Pesta and is conducted only by the Bobohizan or high priestess. Festivities cannot proceed without the presence of Bambaazon and it is through Magavau that the Rice Spirit is invoked.

In the past, Magavau was conducted in the padi fields on the first full moon night after the harvest. A party of Bobohizan led by the foremost senior, would weave a slow procession through the fields chanting prayers to Bambaazon. A male warrior would walk ahead of this group waving a sword in the air, to ward off any evil that might try to disrupt the ritual. The food offered must be of the best quality. When the spirits come, only the Bobohizan will be able to feel their presence. The spirits will find, neatly laid out for them on banana leaves, the choicest chicken meat, eggs, betel leaves and pinang (areca nut), tobacco and kirai ("rollie"). The finest tapai or rice wine is offered to the spirits.

A second offering arranged in a winnowing tray is placed on a specially built bamboo platform. This is for the spirits to bring back to the spirit world to feed those creatures that would otherwise feed off the padi. Pesta Kaamatan around the state culminates in the state level celebrations on May 30 and 31 every year with Magavau being enacted indoors before the celebrations begin.

Pesta Kaamatan: Maiden and lover kick off cultural fest

KOTA KINABALU: A cultural extravaganza over the weekend, set the pace for the month-long Pesta Kaamatan or Harvest Festival celebrations in Sabah.

The Sabah Fest 2010 kicked off with a musical performance entitled "The Legend of Arung Salamiah, Semporna" over two days at Sutera Harbour from Saturday.

A handicraft and food exhibition, also held to liven up the extravaganza, will continue until the end of this week at the Sabah Museum.

A host of activities from songs and dance performances as well as handicraft making have been lined up for guests at the various traditional houses on display at the Heritage Village daily until Sunday.

The Sabah Fest, held annually for the past 20 years, has helped warm things up every May, an auspicious month for the Kadazandusuns as well as other native communities in heralding the rice harvesting season.

The main event for the fest would be the cultural extravaganza and this year's showpiece focused on a legendary story of a Bajau maiden and her lover, Tanjung Kalang.

Slotted in seven segment musicals were unique dances from the various ethnic groups in Sabah such as the Bajau's "panansang", Tidung community's "zepen suara siam", "lumumbai" by the Orang Sungai, "sazau bobolian" by the Papar kadazandusuns, "dang mangalai" by the Bongawan Brunei, "ansuwali" by the Serudung Murut and the "Joget 1Malaysia" as the finale.

On both nights, the musical was performed to a capacity crowd, mostly foreign tourists who were also invited to take part interactively with the musical in some of the dance routines.

German tourist Katherine Faradj, who was with her Morrocan husband Rachid Faradj and daughter Iman, claimed the whole package of events were very "colourful and unique".

"This is our first time in Sabah and it will not be the last," said Katherine, who said that her husband's colleagues in China introduced them to Sabah.

"I feel lucky because we get to see such a wide variety of culture, different costumes, music and most of all, the friendly nature of the people here."
