Penampang: Police reminded the public to lock their houses and drive carefully ahead of the Kaamatan festivities this weekend.

District Police Chief DSP Madang Usat advised those leaving their homes to secure them and let neighbours know of their temporary absence.

He said many people are expected to converge at the KDCA hall here for the culmination of the celebration and advised them to follow the instructions of his personnel.

"Only vehicles with special 'A' stickers will be allowed into the KDCA compound while other motorists will have to park outside. Lock your cars and drive carefully as there would a lot of cars on the road during this period."

Meanwhile, City Police Chief, ACP Ahmad Sofi Zakaria issued a similar advice, urging people not to drink and drive. He lamented that there are still motorists risking it.

"Don't do this and please have a designated driver who is sober if you had too much to drink," he said.

Those driving under the influence of alcohol face a charge under Section 44 of the Road Transport Act if they caused injury or death in the event of mishaps.

"Those found guilty will face a minimum jail sentence of three years or maximum 10 years, and minimum fine of RM8, 000 or maximum of RM20,000," said Ahmad Sofi.

He added intoxicated drivers face a minimum fine of RM1, 000 or maximum RM6,000, or maximum jail sentence of 12 months.
