Sandakan: Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin said it is very important that the Barisan Nasional (BN) win the Nov. 4 Batu Sapi parliamentary by-election and with a bigger majority.
He said this is because the Government wants to ensure that development programmes are continued in the Muslim-majority area.
"Just imagine a non-BN Member of Parliament representing the peopleÉit will be difficult for us to deliver whatever development programmes to the people there," he said at a dinner with BN election machinery here.
He said the difficulty would arise because an opposition MP would not share the common goal of a BN Member of Parliament.
"An opposition MP will only create problems to the people," he said.
Muhyiddin said the efforts carried out by the BN would create an impact on the people.
Hence, he said that if BN wins in Batu Sapi, the people's endorsement towards efforts mooted by the Prime Minister would be achieved.
Looking at the BN membership in the parliamentary constituency, he said there is also no reason why the coalition should not win.
He said the number of opposition component parties is not that many compared to the BN.
"Hence, if we all are united as one, I believe it will be easier for us to retain the Batu Sapi Parliament seat.
There are 25,582 registered voters in Batu Sapi of which 59.02 per cent comprised Muslim Bumiputera, 2.69 non-Muslim Bumiputera, 38.06 per cent Chinese and 0.22 per cent others.
The by-election is being called following the death of incumbent Datuk Edmund Chong in an accident in Tanjung Aru in Kota Kinabalu a fortnight ago. So far the BN and opposition SAPP and PKR have announced their candidates.
They are Datin Linda Tsen, the widow of Edmund who would meet Sabah Progressive Party President Datuk Yong Teck Lee and Ansari Abdullah for PKR. There are also expected to be several independents registering to contest when nomination begins today.
