Repair Windows XP System Files

If you experience problems with Windows XP, the cause can often be related to system files. With a fresh installation of Windows XP, these files are installed and are of the correct version. Unfortunately not all programs deal with the Windows installation correctly, so if are experiencing Windows XP errors after installing and using programs that have not been programmed properly, chances are that your system files are corrupted.

Corrupted system files can lead to many different problems, depending on the applications executed at that point in time. Some programs will not work while programs show undefined or erratic behavior. Worst case scenario, your PC crashes regularly.

To fix Windows XP problems that are related to system files, the best solution is to run a system scan for corrupt Windows installation files. Follow the steps below to execute a scan of your Windows XP system files:

1. Press and hold the Windows key and then press the R-key.

2. In the Run dialog box, type sfc /scannow and click OK.

3. A Windows File Protect dialog box will show up that shows the progress of the file system scan.

4. If you are prompted for the original Windows XP installation disk, insert it and click Retry.

This process will repair the Windows system files (dll’s, drivers, services, etc.), so once the processing is complete, any problems related to Windows XP system files should be fixed. Use this simple process if you are experiencing Windows problems and do not know how to fix them.

If your Windows errors are still persisting after the repair process for system files, you will know the Windows errors are not related to system files.

Free Antivirus and Antispyware

Every computer needs protection. But what if you've got no money for security software? Don't worry--there's power security software and services that can keep you safe, for free.

The Internet is full of brilliant ideas, marvelous software…and danger. You absolutely must use antivirus and antispyware protection if you connect to the Internet. Even if your computer is locked in a WiFi-proof Faraday cage with no connection to the outside world, threats like the Conficker worm can slip in via removable drives. Going without security software is simply not an option. But what if this year's economy has left a big fat zero in your budget's security column? Never fear—you can still get reasonable protection without paying a cent.

If you decide to shell out for security, Spyware Doctor with AntiVirus 2010 is our Editors' Choice for standalone malware protection; Prevx 3.0 is another good choice with an innovative approach. You'll pay a bit more for a full suite, but you'll also get more comprehensive protection. Norton Internet Security 2010 is our Editor's Choice for security suite; it's what I use myself. BitDefender Internet Security 2010 and ZoneAlarm Extreme Security 2010 are also good choices. But all of these apps will cost you money—money you might not have.

Most of the free products I've reviewed offer the full range of protection against malware (which includes virus, spyware, rootkits, and so on). They will both remove malware that's already present on your system and keep any new malware from installing. HouseCall 7.1 takes a different approach. It's a scan-only tool with no real-time protection. The free edition of Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware 1.36 is also scan-only—you have to pay if you want real-time protection. On the plus side, you don't have to worry about real-time conflicts either, so these two make good "second opinion" scanners.

IObit Security 360, AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition 9.0 and avast! Free Antivirus 5.0 beta all pair up with non-free editions. AVG's paid edition includes more protective features than the free edition. The other two are fully functional—the only reason to get the paid edition is if you're using the product for business.

HouseCall and Panda Cloud Antivirus Free Edition 1.0 eschew the traditional signature database in favor of a "cloud" database that's always up-to-date. You never need virus signature updates with these products. Without a working Internet connection, though, they can't connect with their in-the-cloud intelligence. Panda will attempt a scan using local data, but it warns that effective detection requires an Internet connection. The various products have different strengths and weaknesses. Panda, our Editor's Choice for free anti-malware, outshines even the commercial programs in its ability to keep malware from installing on a clean system, but Microsoft Security Essentials 1.0 scored highest in this group at cleaning up existing problems. IObit did poorly in almost every test but managed good scores for blocking and removing scareware (rogue security software).

Since these tools are free you can freely experiment and find which one you like best. You might even install a combination, like Panda for real-time protection and avast! (with real-time protection turned off) for scanning. Don't let a lack of funds leave your computer vulnerable.

Free Products:

avast! logoavast! Free Antivirus 5.0 beta
Unrated (beta)
Free
avast! Free Antivirus 5.0 beta offers very good malware protection at no cost. It's especially good at malware removal and rootkit removal tests, and it offers fine control over settings and detailed reporting.

AVG logoAVG Anti-Virus Free Edition 9.0

Free
AVG believes everyone deserves free basic protection against Internet threats. The company's free antivirus offers that protection, and it's better than Microsoft's free product. Of course, the best for-pay anti-malware tools are even better, but not everyone can afford to pay.

Trend Micro HouseCall 7.1Trend Micro HouseCall 7.1

Free
Trend Micro's HouseCall gets to work quickly and uses a cloud-based malware database to find viruses and other threats. It's great for a second opinion alongside your existing solution because it doesn't run in the background when not scanning. That lack of real-time protection also means it shouldn't be your only anti-malware solution.

IObit Security 360IObit Security 360

Free
IObit Security 360 installs and scans quickly. The problem is, it just doesn't do the job of removing malware or preventing malware installation.

MalwareBytes' Anti-Malware 1.36Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware 1.36

Free
Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware does a good job of cleaning up malware, especially those annoying rogue security programs, though it's not effective against commercial keyloggers or rootkits. And the real-time protection in the extra-cost Pro edition isn't worth the money. But be sure to add the free edition to your security arsenal.

Microsoft Security Essentials betaMicrosoft Security Essentials 1.0

Free
Installing the free Microsoft Security Essentials will protect your system from malware—to a degree. But you'll get better protection from one of the other well-known free anti-malware products.

Panda logoPanda Cloud Antivirus Free Edition 1.0
Editors' Choice Logo
Free
Panda Cloud Antivirus offers free malware protection in a lightweight package with an ultra-fresh user interface. It's the best all-around free antivirus app we've tested, which earns it an Editors' Choice.

Non-free Products:

BitDefender 8 Professional PlusBitDefender Internet Security 2010

$79.95 direct (for three licenses)
BitDefender offers everything you expect in a suite and more. It's especially good at malware detection and offers better antispam, parental controls, and privacy protection than most suites. It affects performance more than some, but it's a very good choice for all-around protection.

Norton Internet SecurityNorton Internet Security 2010
Editors' Choice Logo
$69.99 direct (for three licenses)
Utilizing innovative technologies that crank up your PC's protection without bogging down its performance, Norton Internet Security 2010 remains the best overall security suite on the market.

Prevx 3.0Prevx 3.0
Editors' Choice Logo
$29.95/year (direct)
This forward-looking behavior-based anti-malware tool is incredibly small and fast because its intelligence lives in the cloud. It detected more threats than other products and overall scored better than its signature-based competition. One weak point—its cleanup leaves behind many traces. Even so, it earned a PCMag Editors' Choice for antispyware.

Spyware Doctor with AntiVirus 2010Spyware Doctor with AntiVirus 2010
Editors' Choice Logo
$39.95 direct (for three licenses)
Spyware Doctor with AntiVirus 2010 adds numerous new "guards" against malware and promises enhanced malware detection and cleanup—and delivers. This product, our newest Editors' Choice, broke records in my malware-removal and malware-blocking tests.

ZoneAlarm logoZoneAlarm Extreme Security 2010

$69.95 direct (for three licenses)
ZoneAlarm Extreme Security 2010 boasts impressive features, including full-disk encryption. But it slows performance, installing it is torture, and its anti-malware scores are only so-so. It's still a good product, but I'm not quite as thrilled with it as I was last year.

The Descent Part 2 wallapaper

The Descent Part 2

Release

The film was originally set to be released in May 2009, but was delayed. It was released in France on October 14, Japan on November 7, Argentina on November 19. It was released in UK cinemas on December 4, 2009.

The US release date for The Descent: Part 2 was announced by the Weinstein Company on February 12th, 2010 and is permanently set for 27th April 2010, as a straight to DVD release over Lionsgate.

Box office

In France the film has proven successful reaching #5 and grossing $1,097,535 in its opening weekend. Total gross in France now stands at $2,438,834.

However in the UK, the film did not reach expectation debuting at #9making the first week domestic gross $313,739. Total gross in the UK now stands at £662,279.

The Descent Part 2

Production

Due to the first film being a commercial and critical success, it was decided that a sequel would be produced. While Marshall wouldn't direct the film, he was assigned to oversee its production.

Marshall received the first draft of the film in late July 2006, with no directors or cast in mind. He made it clear that intended to incorporate more of the feeling of claustrophobia like that of a particular scene in the previous film. Marshall tells Bloody-Disgusting.com about new ideas for the film, "The monsters they can deal with, and a bit of the claustrophobia, they can deal with, but the combination is definitely something we want to incorporate that into the sequel, by putting the monster and the girls in a really tight spot."

When The Descent was released in 2006 in the United States, Lionsgate picked up the film as distributor and edited the last few minutes of the film, changing the ending. When Dreadcentral.com asked Marshall which of the film's two endings the sequel would be picking up after, he said that it wouldn't be known until he approved a script.

Filming began in May 2008 at Ealing Studios in London. Ealing Studios was featured on BBC London in June 2008 going behind the scenes of the filming of 'Part 2'. In that broadcast it was confirmed that Shauna MacDonald would be returning to play her character Sarah. Most of the other original cast members are now also returning although most of them only in flashbacks and possible hallucinations. The film was shot on all three of the main stages at Ealing Studios and some scenes were filmed on location at Bourne Woods near Farnham in southwest Surrey, England.

The film was filmed using elaborate sets, miniatures, and blue screen digital images. This was revealed on BBC London's behind the scenes look.

The production was designed by Simon Bowles who designed the original film, art directed by Mark Scruton. The sets were built by DRS Construction and Armordillo.

The digital set extensions and all VFX were created by Swedish VFX company Filmgate.

The Descent Part 2 - Plot

The Descent Part 2 is a claustrophobic British horror film, a sequel to the critically acclaimed 2005 horror film The Descent. Shot in London, the film was released in cinemas in the UK on 2 December, 2009 and is currently awaiting release in the US. The film was produced by Christian Colson and co-produced by Paul Ritchie with Neil Marshall, the producer and director of the original, as executive producer.

Plot

Two days after the events of the first film Sarah is washed away to safety with no memory of the events of the last time she was in the cave. She is taken to a hospital where it is revealed some of the blood on her matches that of Juno Kaplan. Sheriff Vaines demands that along with his deputy Elen Rios, Sarah and three specialists -Dan, Greg and Cath- must go back into the cave to find the missing girls. A new entrance is found with the help of a sniffer dog. The girls are sent down via an old elevator operated by the old, mysterious Ed Oswald.

Whilst crawling through a narrow tunnel in the caves, Sarah has a flashback of what happened in the caves, and in a nervous panic, attacks Vaines, Greg and Elen and runs off deeper into the caves. Vaines pursues Sarah but eventually runs into a crawler and fires a shot at one. This causes part of the cave to collapse, separating Cath from the rest of the group. Elen, Dan and Greg arrive in a room full of bones where they find the video camera used by the girls in the first film. They watch the playback, which reveals the girls were attacked by the crawlers. The three are attacked by a group of crawlers and separate.

Elen starts calling for help, alerting the crawlers to her location, but is stopped by Sarah, who warns Elen that the crawlers hunt via sound. The two then watch as a crawler attacks and kills Dan, ripping his throat open and dragging him away.

Cath later escapes and kills a crawler and runs into Greg, the two climbing away from a crawler and using their radio to divert the pursuing crawler away from them. Greg and Cath travel deeper into the cave and find Sam (from the first film) hanging lifelessly. They decide to try to use her to swing across the chasm, but are both attacked by crawlers. Greg falls below, throat bitten whilst tackling a female crawler, and although Cath makes it to the other side, she is attacked and killed once she gets there off-screen.

Elen and Sarah wander deeper into the cave, and kill another crawler before Elen reveals she has a daughter, which makes Sarah more determined to escape. Vaines is wandering around the cave and is about to be killed by a group of crawlers before he is saved by Juno, who is revealed to be alive and an expert in hunting the crawlers. Later, all four meet up again. Juno and Sarah immediately fight, but then they all decide it's best they work together to escape and survive. Juno leads them off into the feeding pit, which she claims is also the exit. Vaines handcuffs Sarah to him so she can't leave them to die like she did to Juno. As they progress, Vaines falls over a ledge, and Elen cuts off his hand to save Sarah from falling as well.

At the film's climax, Elen, Sarah and Juno reach the exit, but are blocked by a small group of crawlers. As they try to tip-toe around the crawlers, Juno is grabbed by a dying Greg. Juno screams in surprise, which gets the attention of four crawlers. Greg dies and the girls are left to fight off the crawlers. The battle is tough, but Elen, Sarah and Juno kill a crawler each. After that, Sarah sees that Juno is losing the battle to a crawler larger than the others and strangles the crawler from behind. Tensing up, the crawler rips into Juno's stomach, mortally wounding her. She and Sarah finish it off before Juno dies in Sarah's arms. As Sarah mourns for her loss, Elen turns around to leave, but finds them surrounded by a large group of crawlers. Sarah, with nothing to lose, screams to draw attention to herself, allowing Elen to escape.

Elen reaches the outside and is about to call for help when she is attacked by Ed, who hits her with a shovel and drags her back to the entrance to be food for the crawlers. A bloodied crawler jumps out at Elen and the movie cuts to the credits.

Paranormal Activity Full Synopsis

A haunted house makes no secret of the fact it's not pleased with its new tenants in this independent tale of supernatural horror. Katie (Katie Featherson) and Micah (Micah Sloat) are a twentysomething couple who've just moved into a new home in San Diego, CA. Katie has an interest in the paranormal and believes that malevolent spirits have been following her since childhood, though Micah is not so easily convinced. However, after several nights of loud noises and strange happenings, Micah starts to agree with Katie that some sort of ghost may have followed them to the new home. After a paranormal researcher tells the couple he can't help them, Micah decides to take control of the situation and sets up a battery of video cameras so that if a spirit manifests itself, he can capture its behavior on tape. Once the surveillance cameras are in place, Katie and Micah bring in a Ouija board in an effort to talk to the spirits, a move that deeply offends the ghosts. Paranormal Activity was the first feature film from writer and director Oren Peli. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide

Soon after moving into a suburban tract home, Katie (Katie Featherston) and Micah (Micah Sloat) become increasingly disturbed by what appears to be a supernatural presence. Transformers 3 Locations Revealed

The northeast is under attack by snow and movie news is a bit slow. To keep myself and you readers occupied here's a small bit of info from the Transformers 3 production: director Michael Bay has two shooting locations in mind.

According to Bay's official site "there will be big action sequences shot in Chicago and Moscow this time around." Unfortunately, there's no word on when these shoots will begin or what else will be involved in the production. We can't even be sure that Chicago will be Chicago in the finished project as it could be a stand-in for another city in the end.

However, thanks to its distinctive architecture Moscow will likely be playing the part of Moscow in Transformers 3. Unless it's playing the part of Robot Heaven, in which case I will raise an angry fist towards the sky because I will never forgive Bay for that ludicrous moment in Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen.

EPF declares 5.65% payout after a sound performance

KUALA LUMPUR: The Employees Provident Fund (EPF) has declared a divide nd of 5.65% for the financial year ended Dec 31, 2009, an increase of 1.15 percentage points over the 4.50% paid out for 2008.

The dividend rate was declared on the back of the highest ever net income achieved of RM19.63bil, an increase of 34.82% from the RM14.56bil recorded in the previous year.

“2009 was a significant year for the EPF as it rode out the impact of the global financial crisis.

“While the EPF continues to be challenged by the fragile economic environment, our investments nonetheless delivered a sound performance for the year,” chairman Tan Sri Samsudin Osman said in a statement yesterday.

During the year under review, 72.53% of total invest ment was devoted to fixed income instruments in line with EPF’s prudent approach, while 27.05% was in equities and the remainder in property.

As of Dec 31, 2009, EPF’s investment portfolio grew 8.55% or RM29.25bil to RM371.26bil from RM342.01bil in 2008.

On prospects for next year, Samsudin said it would be “greatly dependent on the economic performance of the country and internationally.”

He said globally, financial markets continued to be volatile and this might have an impact on the price performance of EPF’s investments and future income.

“We will continue to focus on our key goals of preserving the capital of our contributors and ensuring a satisfactory real rate of return,” he added. — Bernama
