TV host Daphne to star in movie

Kota Kinabalu: Tambunan-born television host Daphne Iking will be starring in local movie "Belukar" which will be shot in the State and Labuan this month.

Belukar, which means "bush" in English, will be produced by local production house Preston Zaidan Productions Sdn Bhd.

At the soft launching on Sunday, Belukar's film director cum scriptwriter Jason Chong said his first attempt at movie-making was born out of his fascination for the beauty of Sabah and Labuan.

Belukar will narrate the life of Eva (Daphne Iking), who plays the role of professional Sabahan insurance swindler who amasses more than RM100 million through fraudulent insurance claims.

As expected, insurance companies investigate her but unfortunately none of the insurance investigation agents is able to pin her down to the bogus insurance claims.

Along comes a dashing insurance investigator, Nik (Bront Palarae) who represents the AGB insurance company.

As the story goes, Nik falls for Eva who is unaware that Nik is investigating her and as the plot thickens Nik struggles with his feelings for Eva and he must choose between love, honesty and drama. The film will also use the talent of Labuan-born Norashikin better known as Ekin of AF4.

Others in the cast are Azhar Sulaiman, Dato' Tarmimi Siregar, Danny, Annuar Chew Kin Wah, Sabrina Hassan, Azwan Kombos, Md Eyzendy Aziz, Ray Redzuan, Fong U-Shin Xavier, Sharmila Dedy Borhan and Linora Low.

Chong said the film, set to be shot from March 9-31, has already received strong support from government agencies and NGOs such as the police, Sabah Tourism Board, City Hall and Sutera Harbour Beach Resort, among others.

He said high quality equipment and up-to-date software would be used to ensure the quality of the film.

"We will be featuring new faces to form a generation of backup actors in the nation's film industry which is obviously in need of fresh talents.

"This is among Preston Zaidan Productions' aim to strengthen the entertainment industry in the country," he said.

The production house was formed in Kota Kinabalu and has its branch in Kuala Lumpur. It is a subsidiary of Preston Shipyard Sdn Bhd, a Bumiputera corporation. Its board of directors is a combination of businessmen, professionals and creative groups from Sabah, Sarawak and Kuala Lumpur.
