KOTA KINABALU: In keeping with their tradition, Sabahans flocked to the seaside and rivers for a midnight dip to wash away the misfortunes of the past year and usher in the new year.
The mandi buang sial was the highlight of an evening of festivities along favourite picnic spots such as Tanjung Aru and the new Likas coastal park.
Clean start: Sabahans charging into the sea at Tanjung Aru Beach for their traditional dip.
“We’ve been doing this for years and it’s a fun outing for the family,” said businessman S.Y. Lee, at the Tanjung Aru beach.
For those who couldn’t find a spot along the beach, a dip in the river or a cold fast-flowing stream, such as at Kampung Kiansom in Inanam near here was an invigorating alternative.
“It doesn’t matter if it’s the sea or river, so long as there’s a place to dip at midnight. This means we are starting the new year anew,” said Kionsom villager Maskir Gitom.
In his New Year message, Chief Minister Datuk Musa Aman said the state would focus on strengthening its tourism, agriculture and manufacturing sectors.
