Video game consoles have come a long way in the three decades since they first appeared. They began as simple entertainment devices for uber-nerd hobbyists—remember the Atari 2600? Since then, gaming has ballooned into a mainstream, multi-billion dollar industry featuring graphical powerhouses like the Sony PlayStation 3, which can render millions of polygons per second. Systems have come and gone in meanwhile, and I thought it would be worth taking a look back to rank the all-time greatest. Raw power isn't a consideration; if it were, the Nintendo Wii, Microsoft Xbox 360, and PS3 would wipe the floor with the Atari 2600, NES, and other trailblazers. Instead, I've ranked them on their importance and innovation. Some selections are obvious; but I've I considered not only consoles released stateside, but overseas as well, so some might surprise you. I've owned all the consoles mentioned, so this list comes from genuine, hands-on experience. Enjoy the ride as I count down the top 10 video game consoles of all time.
