Crowds flock to MCA base for 'handout'

By Charlie Rudai

SANDAKAN: MCA has denied that the party was distributing “handouts” to voters in Batu Sapi

.Sabah MCA chief Edward Khoo said its operation room along Jalan Buli Sim-Sim was flooded by people who were told to come “by certain opposition leaders” that MCA was giving out money.

“This is a very dirty tactic used by the opposition to paralyse our operations on the last day of campaigning,” Khoo told reporters at a coffeeshop near the operation room.

He said that since it was the last day of campaigning, they were paying allowances to the campaign workers.

“We didn’t expect the opposition to tell voters to go to MCA to collect money… that is not our tradition. We believe in working hard and appealing to the voters to cast their ballots,” he said.

Khoo, who is an Assistant Minister in Chief Minister Musa Aman's Cabinet, said that as a result of the dirty tactics of the oppositions, the MCA machinery was jammed for most of the day.

He said MCA campaign workers were not able to enter the operation centre to do their jobs.

“We had to re-organise our machinery and find a way to brief our campaign workers… I have never seen such dirty tactics,” he said.

When asked if he knew which opposition party had made the call, he said he only received information that certain opposition leaders were asking voters in Batu Sapi to collect payouts in MCA.

“There is no such thing… I am utterly disgusted with this baseless accusation,” he said, adding that every BN component party was doing its best to do its work on the final day.

“We are not so stupid to do anything that is against the rules. People who have little senses might do this but not us,” he said.

A check at the MCA headquarters saw several people still hanging around hoping to get the “payout”.
