BANGI: A group of thieves, believed to be from the notorious Oxy
Gang', cut into an ATM at the Tabung Haji building here and escaped with
RM250,000.
The theft was believed to have been carried out between 2.30am and 4.20am yesterday.
Selangor
CID chief Senior Asst Comm Mohd Adnan Abdullah said several passers-by
spotted smoke coming from a bank and called the Fire and Rescue
Department at about 4.20am.
“The theft was discovered after the
blaze was put out, revealing the ATM which was cut open with an
oxy-acetylene blow torch,” he said.
SAC Mohd Adnan said initial
investigations revealed that the thieves had used a blowtorch to open
one of the five ATMs in the building.
“The CCTVs in the building were also found to have been tampered with,” he added.
The “Oxy Gang” got its name from the thieves' method of breaking into the thick shell of ATMs.
The group is believed to be behind a string of similar robberies amounting to losses of about RM1.3mil in cash.
From
June 1 to Sept 14, the gang had stolen money from a number of ATMs at
several places, including Bandar Baru Salak Tinggi, Taman Permata,
Wangsa Maju and Seremban 2.
Those with information on the cases
are urged to contact the Selangor police hotline at 03-2052 9999 or the
